Latino Mentoring Training Institute (LMTI)

The Office of Minority Health Resource Center (OMHRC) is launching the Latino Mentoring Training Institute (LMTI). The purpose of this new project is to increase leadership, mentorship and conflict-management skills among community-based and faith-based organizations working in HIV/AIDS prevention, education and treatment among Latino populations.

The LMTI is designed for organizations that recognize the risk of not leading in a changing environment, and that are committed to building organizations and management teams that produce extraordinary results. Funded through the Office of Minority Health, by the Department of Health and Human Services' Minority AIDS Initiative, the LMTI is led by OMHRC.

Program Description

The LMTI is a skill-building training and knowledge sharing project designed to prepare community leaders to respond to the current challenges and needs in Latino communities across the United States. Increasing the mentorship, leadership and conflict-management skills in the Latino nonprofit sector is essential to continue the HIV prevention efforts among the Latino population in the U.S. By building the capability of the leaders in these key areas and developing a broad understanding of their inter-connectivity, the LMTI prepares the participants to focus on strategies and actions that will enhance organizational effectiveness.

National Latino Aids AwarenessLMTI will form a Mentoring and Leadership Network of national nonprofit Latino leaders from an array of organizations working on community challenges related to HIV/AIDS and interested in supporting ongoing national prevention efforts.

The LMTI will also provide new opportunities for Latino leaders to come together to learn from each other, to collectively develop their skills and focus on developing a new generation of leaders in the field of HIV/AIDS prepared to work collaboratively at the local, regional and national level.


Structure

LMTI is a challenging nine week program, comprised of a series of six webinars conducted over a three-month period and a two-day, face-to-face training in Washington, D.C. See Dates section for specifics.


Topics

There will be three key elements to the LMTI:

  • Mentorship: This element will cover modalities and principles of co-mentoring future leaders in the nonprofit sector and how to identify and work with mentors.

    The LMTI will require senior leaders to mentor promising junior staff members within their organizations. It will also offer opportunities for mentoring senior and junior staff of other participating organizations working on HIV/AIDS.

  • Leadership Development: This element will cover leadership abilities, leadership versus management, responsibilities, styles, vision, team building, team effectiveness, negotiation and communication tools.

    Participants will develop new perspectives, leadership competencies and techniques to maximize their vision and leadership efforts. Participants will return to their places of work with a clear view of their personal leadership styles and with pathways for development.

  • Conflict Management: This element will cover the role and characteristics of different staff, tensions and conflicts, basic tools to recognize and manage conflict before and after they arise. Participants will gain insight into how to reduce conflict and build consensus.


LMTI Goals & Outcomes

  • The LMTI will form a Latino Mentoring and Leadership National Network of nonprofit leaders, working across organizations and communities to address HIV/AIDS needs and committed to supporting ongoing national prevention efforts.

  • The LMTI will increase participants' abilities to successfully lead their organizations, thereby building their organization's capacity. All participants will strengthen their knowledge and skills to effectively mentor future leaders. Participants will explore behavioral issues from a self-assessment profile to improve communication, interpersonal relationships and teamwork.

  • LMTI participants will develop organizational and individual action plans to integrate mentorship and leadership development processes into their organizations to support and nurture the next generation of leaders to address the HIV/AIDS issues impacting Latinos across the U.S. and its territories.
The following activities will take place:
  • Each participant will report on two networking activities outside the LMTI among participants where they have implemented the theoretical constructs of the trainings into their working, professional lives.

  • For two to four months, each participant will select and co-mentor another participant from a different agency on specific topics presented and/or identified at LMTI.

  • By the end of the training, participants will have developed individual mentoring action plans to support and nurture the next generation of leaders to address the HIV/AIDS issues impacting Latinos across the U.S.

Who Should Apply

Interested organizations must identify a team of two staff members (senior and junior level) as candidates to participate in this unique skills building training program.

The LMTI project aims to recruit a highly diverse group of Hispanic/Latino teams representing a wide range of backgrounds, functions and geographic regions in the HIV/AIDS nonprofit sector.

  • Latino-serving nonprofit organizations and communities working on HIV/AIDS across the U.S. and its territories.

  • Hispanic/Latino candidates from urban or rural community-based and faith-based organizations who are HIV positive, transgender, women, people of color, disabled, who are infected or affected by HIV/AIDS and people who will bring compelling perspectives or life experiences to the project, are strongly encouraged to apply.

Nonprofit organizations should nominate teams of two candidates, both of whom meet the following criteria:

  • Candidate #1: High-potential senior and middle management executives, such as the director, deputy director or program manager.

  • Candidate # 2: Junior manager eager to prepare for executive leadership.

  • Successful in their current positions, having a record of achievement.

  • Seek to improve their leadership, mentorship and conflict management skills and to bring forward the best in themselves and others.

How to Register and Apply

Interested organizations must register and identify a team of two staff members (senior and junior level) as candidates to participate in this unique skills building training program. We encourage organizations to nominate the two candidates before the deadline since the space is limited to 15 organizations.

  • Step 1: Register and complete the LMTI Organization Registration Form. To request the Organization Registration Form, please email us at LMTI@minorityhealth.hhs.gov

  • Step 2: After reviewing the Organization Registration Forms, each identified candidate will receive a Candidate Application Form that must be completed and returned by January 25, 2010.

  • Selected applicants will be notified of their acceptance into the program by January 29, 2010.

How much does the LMTI cost?
There is no registration cost, but space is limited. There is no financial cost to the participant beyond time and commitment to the program. However, selected team candidates must be fully committed to participating in all aspects of the program and have the support of their organization and its leadership in order to dedicate time to contribute to goals of LMTI. Airfare, hotel and ground transportation for the face-to-face training in Washington, D.C., will be provided for all the selected candidates. The LMTI participant's scholarships are fully funded with support from the Department of Health and Human Services' Minority AIDS Initiative.

What kind of time commitment is expected?
LMTI Participants are expected to participate fully in all of the scheduled sessions. The program content is sequential and meant to be experienced as a group. Therefore, participants who miss more than one session will be asked to withdraw from the LMTI.

What are the selection criteria for the LMTI participants?
The selection criteria directly reflect and are tied to the questions in the LMTI Candidate Application Form. The selection committee carefully reviews the applications, the background and aspirations of the candidates and the candidate's support from the organization.

Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee and competitively ranked according to:

  • Commitment to LMTI goals and outcomes,
  • Clarity of professional development goals and
  • Strength of letters of support.
