Description of organization:
The Oklahoma State Department of Health's (OSDH) Office of Minority Health was established in 1994 to coordinate racial/ethnic minority health and health disparities (MH/HD) activities across the Department. The OMH is housed in the Community Development Division; the mission is to lead Oklahoma in improving the health status of Oklahoma’s minority and underserved populations by partnering, developing policies and implementing strategies to reduce and ultimately eliminate health disparities. The OSDH consults on MH/HD issues with the Governor’s Task Force on the Elimination of Health Disparities, which is comprised of representatives from the state’s racial/ethnic minority communities, the health sector and staff from the OSDH. OSDH maintains partnerships with an array of entities active in MH/HD, including local health departments, tribal governments, the federal government, an MH/HD advisory body, community-, faith- and non-profit organizations, health systems, schools and universities, clinical networks and the media.
Description of project:
OMH provides translation and interpreter services for agency employees and OSDH clients, participates in an internal Minority Advisory Panel to address health disparities issues, assists in the development of cultural competency policy and Limited English Proficiency compliance as required through federal CLAS (Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services), provides technical and administrative support to community programs that provide violence prevention-based services to disadvantaged and minority youth.
