Individuals of Hispanic descent are presently among one of the largest and fastest growing ethnic populations within the U.S. However, this demographic continues to remain significantly underrepresented as faculty members and researchers within institutions of higher education, including Hispanic-serving institutions (HSIs). Creating a pipeline to scientific research careers will aide in combating this issue by increasing the number of Hispanics actively working in health research. The Hispanic Health Research Training project strives to address the underrepresentation of Hispanics in health research by encouraging and preparing Hispanic undergraduate students to pursue academic health research careers. The project's intervention will include an intensive summer, as well as a year- round academic fellowship focused on addressing health disparities that commonly impact Hispanic communities (e.g. health consequences of smoking and the benefits of alternative culturally appropriate medicines) through research.
The target population includes Hispanic high school students who will be recruited to participate in the academic fellowship. The main strategies of the project include, creating and facilitating the fellowship program, recruiting participants and tracking student achievement. It is anticipated that the long-term outcomes for the students participating in this training program will include improved knowledge of health careers and health disparities, increased self-efficacy and student achievement, and increased connections with mentors in the health field.
