Improving the Health of Hispanics and Other Minorities through Workforce Development and Data Analysis

The Hispanic population in the U.S. has been increasing steadily over the last few decades. However, the number of Hispanic medical professionals remains disproportionately low. An increase in the number of culturally competent Hispanic medical professionals equipped to meet the growing needs of an underserved population will aide in reducing health disparities. This project plans to increase Hispanic representation within health professions, and the awareness and utilization of health disparities data. These goals will be achieved by using best practices to facilitate an annual two-day workforce development opportunity (as a pipeline to medical professions) for 150 Hispanic high school and community college students.

The main strategies of the project include facilitating a supplementary career development program for Hispanic students, and assembling working groups to catalog, assess and provide recommendations to datasets for appropriately addressing health disparities.

A process evaluation will document program operations and the extent to which the project is being implemented as planned. The outcome evaluation will measure progress toward improved perceptions and/or knowledge gained. Online surveys of faculty and administrators; key informant telephone interviews; program records; and post workshop satisfaction surveys have all been identified as sources of outcomes data. It is expected that by the end of the program, 90 percent of participants will demonstrate increased awareness of health career opportunities; 90 percent will accurately describe the application processes for college entrance; and 90 percent will demonstrate improved skills to deliver oral presentations.
