Hepatitis and American Indians/Alaska Natives

Historically, the highest rates for Hepatitis A occurred among American Indian/Alaska Natives. However rates which were over 60 cases per 100,000 before 1995 have decreased dramatically.

  • In 2011, American Indian/Alaska Natives were twice as likely to develop a case of Hepatitis C, as compared to the White population.
  • In 2008, American Indian/Alaska Natives ages 40 years and over, were 2.5 times more likely to have Hepatitis B, than non-Hispanic Whites.
  • American Indian/Alaska Native women are 1.6 times as likely to die from viral hepatitis, as compared to Non-Hispanic Whites.
