Implementing the National Standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services in Health and Healthcare (National CLAS Standards)

The NPA supports the implementation of the National Standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services in Health and Health Care through activities that reflect and build on the premise that effective communication is key for successful interactions between health care providers and their patients. The NPA supports the implementation of the National CLAS Standards through three strategies on workforce diversity, cultural competency training and development of the field of practice:

  • Develop and support the health workforce and related industry workforces to promote the availability of cultural and linguistic competency training that is sensitive to the cultural and language variations of diverse communities.
  • Increase diversity and competency of the health workforce and related industry workforces through recruitment, retention and training of racially, ethnically and culturally diverse individuals through leadership action by health care organizations and systems.
  • Encourage interpreters, translators, and bilingual staff providing services in languages other than English to follow codes of ethics and standards of practice for interpreting and translation. Encourage financing and reimbursement for health interpreting services.

Current efforts by NPA partners such as the Regional Health Equity Councils to support the implementation of the National CLAS Standards focus on raising awareness among leaders and practitioners within healthcare sector organizations about the standards and best practices for cultural competency.
