American Indian/Alaska Native
American Indian/Alaska Native males had an HIV infection rate that was 29% lower than the total male population in 2023.1 American Indian/Alaska Natives were diagnosed with HIV at a rate that was 39% lower than the total population.2 In 2023, American Indian/Alaska Natives with HIV died at a rate that was 46% lower than the total population.3 The rate for AIDS deaths was 49% lower than the total population.4 In 2023, American Indian/Alaska Native males with HIV infection died at a rate that was 53% lower than the rate of total male population.5 In 2023, American Indian/Alaska Native females with HIV died at a rate that was 24% lower than the total population of females.6

Asian American
Non-Hispanic Asian Americans were diagnosed with HIV infection at an overall lower rate than the total population in 2023, which continues a trend since at least 2019.7 From the beginning of the epidemic (1981)8 through 2022, non-Hispanic Asian Americans account for less than 1% of classifications of persons with Stage 3 (AIDS).9 The rate of HIV diagnosis in Asians in 2023 exceeds levels seen in 2019.10

Black/African American
Non-Hispanic Black or African Americans were diagnosed with HIV infection at 2.55 times the rate of other populations in 2023.11 Non-Hispanic Black or African American males were diagnosed with HIV at 2.95 times the rate of all U.S males in 2023. Non-Hispanic Black or African American females were diagnosed with HIV at 3.84 times the rate of all U.S females in 2023. Despite having higher rates of HIV infection compared to the total US population, the number of annual HIV diagnoses in Black or African Americans has remained flat since 2019.12 In 2023, the prevalence rate of AIDS in non-Hispanic Black or African American females was 4.43 times the rate of AIDS in all U.S. females.13 Non-Hispanic Black or African American males diagnosed with HIV infection died at a rate that was three times higher than the total U.S male population.14 In 2023, non-Hispanic Black or African Americans died of AIDS at a rate that was 3.23 times greater than the total population.15

Hispanic/Latino
Hispanic/Latino American males were diagnosed with an HIV infection at 1.92 times the rate of males in the total U.S. population in 2023.16 Hispanic/Latino American females had a 15% higher rate of AIDS in 2023 compared to females of the total U.S. population.17 In 2023, Hispanic/Latino Americans with an HIV infection died at a rate that was comparable to the total U.S. population.18

Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander
In 2023, non-Hispanic Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders were 39% less frequently diagnosed with HIV infection than people ages 13 and older in the total U.S. population.19 From 2020 - 2022, non-Hispanic Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders account for less than 1% of classifications of persons with Stage 3 (AIDS).20 From 2019 – 2023, there was only one Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islander child aged <13 years diagnosed with HIV.21
