American Indian/Alaska Native

In 2022, suicide was the second leading cause of death for non-Hispanic American Indians/Alaska Natives ages 10–34.1 In 2018, American Indians/Alaska Natives experienced the feeling that everything is an effort, all or most of the time, 2.75 times more than the total population.2 In 2022, the overall death rate from suicide for American Indians/Alaska Natives was 91% higher than the total population.3 In 2022, the death rate for suicide among adolescent American Indian/Alaska Natives, ages 15–19, was 2.74 times higher than the total population.4 Despite higher occurrences of poor mental health, American Indians/Alaska Natives receive less mental health treatment compared to the total population.5

Asian American

Suicide was the leading cause of death for Asians, ages 15 to 24, in 2022.6 In 2023, Asian American male students in grades 9–12 reported seriously considering suicide 22% less than their male peers but reported attempting suicide 10% more than their male peers.7 In 2024, Asian American adults had 55% the rate of mental health treatments as adults of the total population.8 In 2024, Asian adults reported having any mental illness in the past year 27% less frequently than the total population.9

Black/African American

In 2023, suicide was the third leading cause of death for Black or African Americans ages 15 to 34.10 Non-Hispanic Black or African Americans reported experiencing major depressive episodes 74% as frequently as the total population in 2024.11 In 2024, Non-Hispanic Black or African Americans received mental health treatment through prescription medication at 52% the rate of the total population.12

Hispanic/Latino

In 2024, Hispanic/Latino American adults received mental health treatment at a rate that was 28% lower than the total population.13 Hispanic/Latino American adults reported experiencing serious psychological distress at a rate that was 5% lower than the total population.14 Suicide was the second leading cause of death among Hispanic/Latino Americans aged 25-34 in 2023.15

Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander

From 2018–2022, suicide was the leading cause of death for Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders ages 10–14 and the second leading cause of death for those ages 15–34.16 In 2023, although non-Hispanic Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander students in grades 9–12 reported seriously considering attempting suicide 21% less than their peers,17 they actually attempted suicide 61% more frequently as a group compared to their peers.18 In 2024, adult Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders reported receiving prescription medications for mental health treatment 87% less as a group than the total population.19
